The day dawned bright and early on Wonderland. Or rather, it dawned early. The sky was covered with a mass of dark clouds, and the rain seemed eminent. A chill wind raced across the land, carrying with it a flurry of multicolored leaves as it signaled the end of yet another year. For some, it was just another paged closed on a lifetime of nightmares, for others it was merely the beginning. But for all, it was the end of something old and the start of something new. Whether that something was a life altering event, or merely just the close of a year, depended on the individual of course. But whatever the reason, it was a time for change.
On this particular day, Kyle was making his way down towards the market. He wasn't on any special errand from his mistress, no this was for himself. Miss Nae had become rather withdrawn ever since she'd lost Kris to that bastard and his double. She rarely called on him anymore, which left him at a bit of a loss. Not that he wasn't happy about it, it gave him infinitely more time to share with Sarah, which he absolutely loved. But he'd been serving his mistress almost ever since he'd arrived, and not being needed by her was something new. To tell the truth, he rather liked doing things for her. It was always nice to be needed, and unlike most he genuinely liked his master. Sure she could be rather cruel at times, and a kind word never left her lips, but he liked her nonetheless. She was far better than some of the boogies that he might have wound up with. And much as he hated to admit it, it bothered him to see her as she had been of late.
Pushing the thoughts aside, he glanced up at the path ahead. He was just coming into the market, the streets bustling with humans and boogies despite the looming weather. To tell the truth he was more than a bit nervous, not by the boogies but by what it was that he was here for. Kyle.....was here to buy an engagement ring. That's right, he was going to propose to Sarah. He knew that he might be enough to make her happy, but he wanted to try. She meant everything to him, and he never wanted to lose her. He knew that they were brother and sister, and he knew that in their world such a thing was absolutely forbidden. But then, they weren't in their world.
Wandering through the various stalls, he glanced at a few but didn't stop. He had absolutely no money with which to buy such a thing, and he had nothing of value. Except that is, for his father's revolver, the one that he'd shot and killed the bastard with just before being taken. He didn't want to be rid of it, though he didn't know why he didn't. It seemed to be the one thing he had left, a reminder of a past better forgotten. Yet, he felt himself wanting to hang on to it. But if being rid of it was what had to be done to make Sarah happy, then the damn thing was going to be gone in an instant.
He'd been walking around for about an hour, the pistol quite obvious as it sat there in his back pocket. Looking around, he finally stopped next to a jewelry stand. He'd passed this stand several times and had noticed the boogie taking quite a keen interest in the gun he carried, so he knew that he could strike a bargain with him. Looking over the selection before him, he took careful note of each an every item. He had to be careful with the selection, he'd only get one chance and he wanted it to be perfect.
Unfortunately, there was nothing there that satisfied him. None of the rings were good enough to grace Sarah's hand, and they certainly weren't good enough to serve as a testament to his eternal love for her. And so he looked up at the man, his face clearly showing his displeasure. "Is this really the best you have?" The boogie snorted at him, putting on their usual air of superiority. "What you see is what you get kid. Don't like it, then go somewhere else." Kyle was silent a moment, before turning away. "Alright. I saw a much wider selection at that stand over on the other side of the market." As he started to step away the man bumbled out something before rushing into the back.
Kyle smirked as he turned, patiently waiting until the man came back with a wooden box. Carefully lifting the glass wood, he presented to the young human a small assortment of absolutely stunning gems. However as he picked through them, not even these seemed enough to him. Seeing this the man was desperate, and so produced his trump card. Opening a small box, he revealed to the boy the absolute in perfection. It was a small silver ring, with an absolutely flawless emerald set into it. From the perfect stone lay intricate designs around the sides of the ring, all inlaid with the same emerald as the centerpiece. To make things even more perfect, it was the exact color of Sarah's eyes.
Though he was absolutely stunned, his face was a perfect mask of apathy. If he had shown that he was actually interested in the piece, the price would have exploded. So instead he merely sighed, frowning as he reluctantly placed the pistol on the table. The boogie eagerly snatched it up, just as Kyle did the box. The boogie was of course planning to test out his new toy on the boy and get his prized merchandise back, there was no way he was going to let the human walk away that easily. Unfortunately for him, by the time that he discovered the gun was empty, Kyle had already disappeared into the crowd.
Now he just had to summon up the courage to ask her the question that would change his life, whether for better or worse.
